Community cafe and informal therapy space, Brighton & Hove, 2012
Community cafe and informal therapy space
Intended Use:
The project is based on carrying out renovation works to a not-for-profit community centre and café for Brighton & Hove council. The client, ‘Cascade’ (a community based, peer-led charity whose mission is to empower people to find and sustain recovery from substance misuse), acquired a property that was once an old Skin Candy Tattoo Shop on Baker Street, with the aim of turning it into a café and informal therapy centre which would act as a base for the charity’s activities.
A Space for Healing:
The idea of the project was to combine old and new structures; we wanted to reveal the history of the building and retain, where possible, all of the existing finishes.
Given the nature of Cascade’s work, it was important to ensure that the building’s interior was full of light and natural greenery in order to present a bright and calming space and a sense of relaxation and rehabilitation whilst having cup of tea.
